UPHOLSTERY WORKSHOPS SUFFOLK ***GET ON OUR WORKSHOP WAITING LIST***
If you've been longing to learn upholstery for some time, but worry that it's just another ball to juggle, stop worrying.............
Following years of holding private and group workshops in East Anglia, we began offering mobile workshops in both modern and traditional upholstery techniques, in the hope that potential students will find it easier to book in learning days in the comfort of their own home.
Bringing the workshop to people's homes instead of the people going to the workshop has highlighted many benefits, mainly for the student:
+No need to travel
+Pets can stay at home
+Workshop fee more cost-effective
+No transportation of project piece
+Private 1:1 tuition = faster progress
+Flexibility on workshop dates/times
+Freedom of choice on project
It's important to have a discussion to determine your aims and what you'd like to achieve in your upholstery learning. There isn't much that's uniform about upholstery and as we are also all very individual, it's important to assess each student's requirements and abilities. We never use the words 'easy' or 'just' in Upholstery, so we'll talk a little about the physical commitments you have to make when learning upholstery.
Following our chat, we'll ask for four photos to be sent via email. Best shots will be the front, back, side and underneath so we can make an initial assessment and advise you on how best to get prepared for your upholstery workshops.
After our telephone conversation, we will arrange the Assessment Visit.
An Assessment Visit (AV) is important to determine what you wish to achieve. During the AV, we will discuss all aspects of your project and it will give me the opportunity to advise you on any particular points that need attention or consideration before any workshops dates are booked in. We will also show you the correct way to strip your project of its current fabric and upholstery.
To confirm the AV you will be sent an Invoice for at least £50.00 - the visit fee may be higher depending upon your location. This fee must be paid in advance of the agreed AV date. If you then book a minimum of two days' tuition, a partial refund will be deducted from the Invoice total...this will be shown within the Terms & Conditions provided.
Choosing the top fabric and any finishing trim needs to be considered carefully with your project piece in mind. Whilst there is an abundance of beautiful fabrics to choose from, it's important to think about things like how much traffic will use the piece, which room is it going in and will it be easily damaged.
We'll also discuss the cost of the materials you'll need and I'll advise you on what, where, why and how much! Apart from the top fabric and finishing trim, we are equipped with all the tools, materials and supplies needed for your project which you can buy directly from us at cost.
If you haven't yet found a project piece, I will be able to point you in the right direction.....ideally, your first project should be a piece that you will keep in your home........
to remind you of your hard work and to admire it as your upholstery transformation 'flag ship'.
Once you've grasped the basic methods, you'll be able to tackle small/medium sized projects. The excitement of buying from Auctions and second-hand furniture shops will be enhanced with what you learn from us ..worrying about what to
buy will be a thing of the past!
Whether you wish to become an upholsterer, learn a new skill, complement a furniture up-cycling trade or just do up granny's chair,
it is our desire to build up your confidence and skill to tackle small to medium size projects on your own. We'll always be available to email or call for support after workshops
It seems that everyone's lives are busy these days, so flexibility on getting that 'me' time is essential.
The beauty of 1:1 tuition is that your workshops can be arranged to suit your lifestyle and work/family commitments.
The main teaching days on offer are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, but other days will be considered, apart from Sundays...
we all need a day off!
Once the Assessment Visit has taken place, we will set the first or all the workshop dates. Even if your dates have been booked and paid for, we will look at re-scheduling if your circumstances change or if there's an emergency preventing you from keeping the original dates.
Once a day or dates have been agreed, I will email you an Invoice for immediate settlement, along with my Terms & Conditions. Bank details will be included for the online transfer to be made and when I confirm receipt of the credit, this will serve as your booking confirmation.
The daily rate payable is dependent upon your location and it's distance from Diss. Whilst we don't wish to travel all around the British Isles, we are willing to consider your location. The list below is a guide of rates, however, the actual cost will be assessed individually to ensure it
is fair for everyone.
We may be able to offer a discounted rate if more than one workshop day is booked and confirmed in advance or if a friend/relative can join you
for a 1:2 upholstery workshop:

With an identical pair of wingbacks, Julie needed to learn this specific upholstery process. With 1:1 mobile workshops, she completed the first one and then did the second all by herself. She's still learning but now doing more upholstery alongside
her soft furnishings enterprise.
Julie is now taking on small upholstery commissions for friends and existing customers....she's confident in her work, but knows she can contact us for support if needed.
Hilary had dabbled in upholstery many years ago....she was inspired to start again when sister Sarah decided her Parker Knoll Wingback needed some TLC. They are now well on the way to reviving two lovely old wingback armchairs.
The mobile workshops mean that Willow and Isis don't have to be left home alone whilst the sisters learn upholstery and create beautiful items of furniture that nobody loved anymore. Who wants to cart big chairs around anyway?!
When you tell family and friends that you're learning upholstery, the onslaught begins! "Can you just do this little chair for me?" This happened to Fiona, who after a few workshops with me, found herself upholstering old chairs for the family.
Fiona has produced some amazing pieces, having gained immense confidence from what she learnt at The Diss School of Upholstery and then from her own experiences.
Edward was a very capable and enthusiastic student. He and his wife wanted to change the leather covering on their two seater sofa.
With just a few 1:1 workshops with me, Edward's skills, loads of fabric and sheer determination, the transformation was amazing. I think Edward enjoyed learning how to make piping the most!
The leather that came off the sofa was put to good use by Edward, although he was kind enough to donate quite a bit to our fabric stock!
Having travelled some distance from Suffolk to attend an upholstery course, Wendy was delighted to find out about the mobile workshops we offer. After completing her first project her real desire was to take on an old chaise, starting from scratch.
Wendy stripped the chaise, fixed up the dodgy parts of the frame and then through several regular workshops, she learnt how to apply the webbing support, tie in the coil springs and everything else up to completion. The chaise was gifted to her son and daughter-in-law and I'm sure Wendy will be working on another fine piece soon!
Living in a beautiful part of North Norfolk, Charlie and Jenny contacted us for some upholstery tuition to liven up their set of dining chairs... they chose a very striking fabric to complement these ornate pieces.
Over two workshops at home, Charlie completed the upholstery on one carver chair and one standard seat...he then worked on the other four chairs alone, with the confidence he gained from us.
